How to Change Your Car’s Oil at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Lift it, Open it

First, raise the car high enough to leave room to work underneath. Whether you use a lift, ramp, or jack stand, make sure everything is completely safe. Never work under a vehicle supported only by jack stands.

Most modern cars feature a plastic underbody to improve aerodynamics and protect important components under the engine. On some vehicles it may be necessary to remove the underdash panel to access the oil and oil filter. Most pads are attached using a combination of screws, bolts or plastic clips and can be removed using conventional hand tools. Before step 2, be sure to check for oil leaks. If you find one, have it checked by a mechanic.
