How to Change Your Car’s Oil at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Insert the Drain and Turn on the Filter.

Replace and tighten the drain bolt, but do not over tighten as this may damage the sump and drain bolt. Use force to pull, but not your own strength. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolt to the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Do not under any circumstances attempt to remove the head of the drain plug. Most vehicles have a washer behind the drain plug that needs to be replaced when the drain plug is reinstalled (check your owner’s manual to see if it needs to be replaced).

Then take the new oil filter and apply a thin film of oil (from a can with your fingertip) around the rubber seal on top of the filter. This ensures a proper seal when the filter is tightened. The same rule applies to installing the filter: don’t tighten it too hard, but first by hand and then a little more.
